International Case Competition

Last February, the Brandywine Valley Chapter was proud to sponsor two teams for the Mid-Atlantic District Case Competition in Harrisburg. The University of Delaware won the competition, and received an all expense paid trip to compete at the International Case Competition during the APICS Conference in Orlando, Florida. A total of six universities competed, and our chapter is proud to announce our UD team placed SECOND!

The team competed in five rounds of a computer simulation program called “The Fresh Connection.” It was a learning experience in a virtual environment where teams are challenged to save a juice manufacturer. Each team started the competition with a negative ROI for the Juice Company. Over the course of 5 rounds, our team improved the company performance by over 300%!! Each member of the team took on a role in the company – VP’s of Operations, Purchasing, Sales, and Supply Chain, as well as CEO to ensure decisions did not conflict with one another.

The team also gave a 10 minute presentation to the conference attendees, describing their corporate strategy, decisions they made during the rounds, and lessons learned. It was fascinating to watch them interact with other, learning how important communication was between their functions. The students displayed a thorough knowledge of what they are being taught in the OM program at the University of Delaware, applying their learning’s to the computer simulation successfully!
