"Supply Chain Optimization using Value Stream Mapping"

                           Peter L. King, CSCP
                           Lean Dynamics LLC

We are pleased once again to share a presentation from one of our Chapter members.

Although every company has one or more supply chains, they may not think of them in that way. They may think of them as a loose collection of manufacturing sites, warehouse, and distribution centers, managed as separate entities without realizing the full extent of the interconnectedness and interdependence, nor the benefits of a system-wide view.

In 2017-2018 W.L. Gore developed an optimization process using a higher level of Value Stream Mapping to analyze their supply chains as integrated end to end flows in 3 to 5 day workshops.

The workshop concept was piloted on supply chains in four Gore business units. In addition to reductions in supply chain lead time and increases in responsiveness, the combined financial benefit from these four workshops approached $5 million annually. The workshops also reinforced the importance of some supply chain projects already in progress.

The supply chain mapping format, the workshop schedule, critical success factors, and some of the specific benefits will be described.
